Retail OT Shield

Managed Operational Technology & IoT Security

Protecting the connected infrastructure that keeps retail and food operations running. Fully managed, 24/7 security monitoring, threat detection, vulnerability management and incident response coordination for the refrigeration, facilities and store systems your business depends on.

What we watch in every location

  • Refrigeration OTCase and walk-in controllers, sensors, compressor racks
  • Facilities OTHVAC, building management, environmental monitoring
  • Retail operationsPOS, inventory and store systems sharing the network
  • Vendor remote accessEvery contractor session, at every site

The systems that keep food cold are now on the network

Refrigeration controllers, HVAC and building automation used to sit on their own wires. Today they’re connected, remotely serviced by outside vendors, and often share a network with point-of-sale and corporate systems. Most were never designed with security in mind, and few businesses can say exactly which devices are online or who can reach them.

A compromise here isn’t just a data problem. A changed setpoint, a disabled alarm or ransomware on a facility server can put product, compliance and store operations at risk. Retail OT Shield gives you continuous visibility and a trained team watching around the clock, built on the same SOC, SIEM and incident response that already protect your IT.

How it works

Passive sensors see OT traffic without touching devices. Findings flow into the same SIEM and 24/7 SOC that protect your IT, so one team sees the whole picture.

Conceptual architecture. Data flows and permitted connections are validated for each customer environment.

  • Passive by default

We use passive network sensors and vendor-approved collection. Tools built for Windows servers are never assumed safe for a refrigeration controller.

  • Tested only with permission

Active scanning requires your authorization, equipment vendor approval where applicable, and an agreed testing window.

  • Your people stay in control

We don’t operate equipment or make food-safety decisions. We give your staff and specialists the security facts, fast.

  • Built on recognized guidance

Designed around NIST SP 800-82 Rev. 3 and CISA guidance: asset visibility, segmentation, controlled remote access and safety-conscious response.

Detections tuned for stores and cold chains

We launch every customer with these twelve playbooks, then tune them to your sites. Severity reflects both cyber risk and operational consequence: one compromised controller at a critical distribution center can be a P1 on its own.

Severity and response

  • P1
    Critical: Immediate escalation

Unauthorized manipulation of refrigeration controls or widespread OT compromise

  • P2
    High: Urgent investigation

Compromised vendor account or suspicious controller access

  • P3
    Medium: Standard investigation

Unexpected configuration change or anomalous communications

  • P4
    Low: Routine review

New asset, low-risk exposure or informational event

From alert to lessons learned

OT alerts don’t just join the IT queue. They follow a dedicated classification and investigation path with clear ownership at every step.

  1. DetectOT platform raises an alert; SIEM correlates it with IT activity.
  2. TriageTier 1 decides whether it’s a potential OT incident. If not, it’s documented and closed.
  3. InvestigateTier 2 investigates and sets severity: P1 goes to immediate IR escalation, P2 to priority IR, P3/P4 to standard investigation.
  4. NotifyYour team and our OT specialist are notified according to the agreed escalation plan.
  5. CoordinateWe work with facilities and the equipment vendor; containment happens only with your authorization.
  6. LearnFindings, remediation and an incident report with lessons learned close the loop.

Scenarios we prepare for

Refrigeration controller compromise
Someone gains access to the controllers that run cases, walk-ins and compressor racks.
Unauthorized temperature or defrost changes
Setpoints or defrost schedules are altered outside an approved change.
Ransomware on facility management systems
Building and energy management servers are encrypted or taken offline.
Compromised vendor credentials
A service contractor’s remote login is used by someone else, often across many sites.
Unauthorized access to industrial networks
Traffic crosses from corporate IT into OT where it shouldn’t.
Disrupted temperature monitoring and alarms
Sensors or alarm paths go quiet, hiding a problem until product is at risk.

Retail OT Shield questions

What counts as operational technology in a store or warehouse?

Anything that controls or monitors physical operations: refrigeration controllers and case sensors, compressor racks, HVAC and building management systems, environmental and temperature monitoring, energy management, and connected production or material-handling equipment. Point-of-sale and store systems are monitored too, because they often share networks with OT.

Will monitoring interfere with our refrigeration or building systems?

No. We use passive network sensors and vendor-approved collection methods wherever possible, so we observe traffic rather than touch devices. Any active scanning happens only with your authorization, equipment vendor approval where applicable, and an agreed testing window.

Do you take control of our equipment during an incident?

No. We investigate, contain the cyber threat with your authorization, and coordinate with your facilities team and equipment vendors. Operating refrigeration equipment and making food-safety decisions remain with your authorized staff and qualified specialists.

What frameworks does Retail OT Shield follow?

The service is designed around NIST SP 800-82 Rev. 3 (Guide to OT Security) and CISA guidance, with emphasis on asset visibility, network segmentation, controlled remote access and safety-conscious incident response.

Can this work alongside our existing security tools?

Yes. OT alerts flow into SIEM and SOAR workflows alongside your corporate IT endpoint and network detections, so investigations see the full picture across IT and OT.

How is it priced?

A one-time onboarding fee scaled to the number of locations, then a monthly per-location subscription based on package and asset count. Multi-location customers receive volume pricing. Professional services such as segmentation projects are quoted separately.
